The Hellcat has been tamed, with the long awaited Challenger SRT Demon arriving with 840 hp and 770 ft-lb ready to take on the quarter mile. Taking the title for the world's most powerful factory-production V8, the Demon launches down the drag strip in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph for the quarter mile. Another first comes in the form of the Demon being a street-legal factory-production car that is designed to run on 100+ unleaded high-octane fuel. Full power mode will only be available when that high octane fuel is detected for safe operation.
Changes from the Hellcat to increase power include a larger 2.7 litre supercharger with boost increased to 14.5 psi and the rpm limiter lifted to 6,500 rpm. The valve train, connecting rods, pistons and lubrication system have also all undergone improvements to sustain the higher output of the engine with a reliable package. To help when launching the car hard, Dodge have developed a drag-mode launch assist. This is designed to limit wheel hop without the driver having to lift off the throttle or make any corrections manually.
"With Demon, our goal was to build a car that would tattoo the Dodge logo into the subconscious of the general market, beyond even our loyal enthusiasts, said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars - Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA North America. "To do so, we had to set records that have never been set before, do more than has ever been done before, go beyond even the legendary Hellcat. The result: an 840-horsepower, 9-second muscle car unlike anything that has ever come before it."
