Story

The Honda NSX Type R (NSX-R) was a Japanese Domestic Market exclusive, which was only produced in a limited number of 483 units. The NSX-R came about after the original NSX was tailored to provide a good balance of performance and driveability, with the company tasking its engineers to make sure their new sports car was easy to live with every day on the road. This ultimately lead to some compromises in performance and handling. In order to satisfy the customers who desired a little more hardcore NSX experience, Honda decided to offer a more track focused version.

Weight reduction was first on the to-do list with the sound deadening, spare tire, air conditioning system, traction control and some of the electrical equipment all removed. Recaro provided some lightweight carbon-kevlar racing seats to replace the heavier power leather seats, and Enkei provided a set of lighter forged aluminium wheels, which reduced the cars unsprung weight. All up the weight reduction program removed 120 kg (265 lb) from the car.

Mechanically the NSX-R gained further tuning of the suspension setup to remove the sudden oversteer that could occur in certain cornering conditions, and reduce the tendency to oversteer in high speed corners. In order to improve acceleration, Honda increased the final drive ratio to move the transmissions shift point speeds closer together at the expense of a reduced top speed. Finally the locking limited-slip differential was changed and the engines crankshaft assembly was blueprinted and balanced in the same process done for Honda racing car engines.
