Signalling an important step in the history of Maserati, the Levante which is named after a wind, is the brands first foray into the luxury SUV market. Taking on the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, the Levante is crucial to helping Maserati generate a good cash flow so they can continue releasing high end performance sports cars that we all love. With many buyers opting for the high riding attributes of the SUV, Maserati were faced with being left further behind if they did not compete in this growing market space.
With many questioning a Maserati SUV, the styling should have been the factor to ease everyone’s mind. Unfortunately that is not the case, with questionable looks that aren't overly offensive, yet fail to inspire the Maserati dream. Inside, the cabin presentation is a different story with quality materials and build throughout, making the Levante a pleasant place to be.
Engine options come in the form of a V6 diesel and a more exciting Ferrari derived twin turbo V6 petrol that produces 424 hp and 580 Nm of torque. This power output is lower than that of the Porsche Cayenne, but is good for launching the over 2 tonne mass from 0-100 kph in a good 5.2 seconds. The drivetrain is a 4-wheel drive setup, with 100% of the power sent to the rear wheels, only utilising the fronts when needed.
