Description

The IROC-Z was originally offered by Chevrolet as a package for the Z28 spec Camaro from 1985, moving to become it’s model when the Z28 badging was briefly dropped. Production went until early 1990 when Chevrolet re-introduced the Z28 badge. IROC stands for International Race of the Champions, which was a race series sponsored by Chevrolet during the 1980’s. Similar to NASCAR racing, Chevrolet wanted to use their sponsorship to connect the Camaro with the racing series for their marketing, hence the IROC-Z name. The name was dropped when Dodge took over the sponsorship in 1990.

Two engine choices were available for the 1987 Camaro IROC-Z, a 5.0L 305 TPI V8 with either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. The manual version was good for 218 PS (160 kW), whilst the auto was rated slightly lower with 192 PS (141 kW). Also offered in 1987 was the larger 5.7L 350 TPI V8, pumping out 228 PS (168 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 330 lb-ft (447 Nm) of torque at 2,800 rpm. The two engines were only distinguished from the outside with a “5.7L” added to the “Tuned Port Injection” decal on the cars exterior.
