Sold as a twin to the Ford Mustang, the Mercury Cougar was a sales success early in it's life for the Ford owned Lincoln-Mercury Division. The mercury pony car was a more refined version of Fords offering with it's focus turning away from performance and more towards luxury around 1970 onwards. The 1969 Cougar XR-7 model was available to fitted out as a muscle car with the big 7.0L V8 optioned with the GT pack.

That large V8 produced 340 PS (250 kW) of power with 440 lb-ft (597 Nm) of torque. This helped the Cougar accelerate form 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds. Due to the increased weight of the engine, Mercury fitted upgraded suspension that could handle the extra weight over the front axle and provide better handling. Bigger more powerful brakes with better tyres and a low-restriction exhaust system were also fitted to further complement the GT package.
