The Maserati Ghibli launches the brands first ever hybrid model, a turbocharged 4 cylinder with the power of a V6 and the economy of a Diesel. The 2.0L engine chosen for the job is the same as found in the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, but this time a 48V mild hybrid system has been fitted. This system replaces the alternator with a belt-driven starter motor which recovers energy under braking or whilst coasting. The energy is channeled into a battery that powers an eBooster which helps torque fill the 4 cylinder engine at low revs. This setup can also provide a power boost at higher engine speeds for extra peak performance.
Total power output of this setup comes in at 330 PS (243 kW) at 5,750 rpm, and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm. An eight-speed ZF gearbox handles sending the power to the rear wheels where a mechanical limited-slip differential is waiting to help get it to the ground. Accelerating from 0-62 mph will take 5.7 seconds in the Ghibli Hybrid, which is able to go on to a top speed of 158 mph. Like other mild hybrid cars on the market, the Ghibli will not be able to dive on electric power only. However the electric assistance does help elevate the 4 cylinder engine to greater power and efficiency numbers, which when coupled with the lower weight than that of the equivalent Diesel model, makes for an interesting choice.
