Ferrari’s F8 Spider has been revealed ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show, packing 710 horsepower and a two-piece retractable hard-top roof. As is customary with Ferrari’s mid engined sports cars, they first launch with the hard top version, and then a little while later the open top convertible comes along. Ferrari go to great lengths to keep the Spider as close to the fixed roof version as possible. To that end the structural rigidity, which is compromised by removing the roof, has to be strengthened which equals extra weight. Ferrari has managed to keep weight of the F8 Spider 18 kilograms lighter than the 488 Spider it replaces.
The engine remains the same 3.9L turbocharged V8 that has won the International Engine of the Year Award four years in a row from 2016 to 2019. 720 PS (530 kW) of peak power is generated at 8,000 rpm, and maximum torque of 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) comes in at 3,250 rpm. The folding hard top roof splits into 2 sections and stows away in a tidy 14 seconds, allowing the occupants to experience that V8 without hindrance. The styling features the usual rear buttresses behind the seats, which act as the roll bar and look rather good too. Overall the F8 has scrubbed up rather nice in topless form, looking splendid in yellow.
