Description
Introduced at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, The W12 Syncro concept was the start of a 5 year project created around Volkswagens new W12 engine. Volkswagen commissioned Italdesign Giugiaro to take on the project of developing and enhancing the performance of the powertrain. The result was a 12 cylinder engine which was basically two V6 engines stuck together side by side and combined to create a W configuration. This unique setup allowed for a more flexibility in packaging the engine when compared to traditional V12 configurations.
Peak power was rated at 420 PS (309 kW), and peak torque at 391 lb-ft (530 Nm). The W12 engine saw further development through other concept cars until eventually finding it’s way into some Volkswagen and Bentley passenger vehicles.
