Honda’s popular Civic Type R has received a mild face-lift for the start of the new decade at the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon. Tweaks have been made to the interior, exterior and mechanicals with a focus on enhanced performance and efficiency.
The exterior changes are so minor that you will be hard pressed to spot them. The front central grill has been opened up a bit more to aid in engine cooling, and the lower intakes now have a cleaner look with a body coloured blade and more aerodynamically-efficient insert rather than the old mesh design. The Type R will also be available in a new exclusive paint colour called Boost Blue.
The interior gains a new Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, better sound deadening and shortened gear stick. Mechanically the 2020 Type R enjoys updated dampers, stiffer bushings and revised suspension to improve steering feel and grip. The engine has remained unchanged, with 320 PS (235 kW) of power and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque from the 2.0L VTEC turbocharged 4 cylinder. Drive remains at the front wheels with a 6-speed manual transmission sending power through a limited-slip differential.
