Story

Starting out life in 1963 in an attempt to compete with the established Ferrari, founder Ferruccio Lamborghini had the objective of producing a refined grand touring car. The first decade saw rapid growth for the company until the 1973 worldwide financial downturn and the oil crisis hit, plunging Lamborghini into financial trouble. Ferruccio sold the company to Georges-Henri Rossetti and René Leimer in 1974 who managed to keep Lamborghini alive for another four years until bankruptcy was declared in 1978.

Ownership was once again changed hands in 1980 to the brothers Jean-Claude and Patrick Mimran, who oversaw the creation of perhaps the most well-known Lamborghini of all time, the Countach. 1987 saw yet another change of ownership, with the Chrysler Corporation taking control only to sell the company to the Malaysian investment group Mycom Setdco and Indonesian group V’Power Corporation in 1994. The too only lasted a few years when Lamborghini was once again sold. The year was 1998 and the buyer was Volkswagen Group who would place Lamborghini under the control of the group’s Audi division.

A new era for Lamborghini had begun, bringing much needed stability and growth for the brand in the years following. Lamborghini is now one of Italy’s premier car brands competing with Ferrari on a global stage and holding their own on many levels. The next stage in their journeyed history appears set to take shape with the company now facing the challenges of navigating the transition away from internal combustion engines and into electrification.
